Google's Eddystone will compete iBeacon
Imagine you going to some unknown place and suddenly your phone starts giving you updates about that place. You go to the bus station and your phone gives you an update that your bus is late by 10 minutes or you are in an mall and you get an update on phone about the different location etc in that mall how amazing would all this be???
Eddystone a open source beacon that works on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon format developed by Google serves you with all these amazing features. This device standard specially designed for developers work with beacons and provide location based content straight to users' smartphones.
Eddystone supports different use cases with multiple frame types and also supports versioning to make introducing new functionality easier. A cross-platform technology that is capable of supporting Android as well as iOS or say any platform that supports BLE beacons. The best part of all this is that it’s available for everyone to use and help improve on GitHub under the open-source Apache v2.0 license.

Beacons are basically low-energy battery-friendly hardware that transmit data using Bluetooth. Since Bluetooth have a smaller range it will help retailers, developers and companies to precisely pinpoint the user’s location and send relevant information based on where exactly the consumer is.
