The Women's Day Chronicles.

If I say "International Women's Day" was first observed in the United States how many you would be surprised to hear this? Almost everyone isn't it? but surprisingly only few people in North America are familiar with this unique day; however in Europe knows that March 8th is an official holiday celebrated as International Women's Day. International Women's Day, on March 8th, is the biggest day of the year to simply celebrate women. This major day is celebrated annually around the world, to reflect women's economic, political and social achievements - both historically and up to the present day.

The woman is the most important being for every single person in this world in the form of - mother, daughter and sister - elements without which the whole universe would not exist. But where was International Woman's Day (IWD) born? How is it celebrated and what does it signify internationally?

Pelimanary to the arrival of the 20th century, on March 8th 1857, women from the clothing factories started to protest over the working conditions and the low wages in New York City, resulting into the creation of the first labour union two years later. In the years that followed, more protests were held by women in New York City on March 8th. In 1910 the International Women's Day was established at a conference held in Copenhagen.

More and more people started celebrating it seriously and in the following year, more than a million people gathered in Europe to celebrate on March 8th. The first International Women's Day was observed in 1909 in the US, following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. And from the feminist sixties up to today, the day has gone from strength to strength with more and more women getting involved.

In the United States, it also commemorated the 1911 drama of 140 women who were burned in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Since then, March 8th has become an official holiday in most countries in Europe, Brazil, Cameron, China, Cuba, Vietnam India, Pakistan and Zambia. This important day celebrates women's movement for equality, women's rights and equality of chances. Some countries around the world celebrate both International Women's Day and Mother's Day on March 8th. Countries such as England host yearly events on March 8th to commemorate the women who fought for the right to vote, right to educate, right to medical care, divorce or contraception.

Now in its hundredth year, this day sees governments, groups and organizations focusing gender issues, on both a local and global level. With the majority of International Women's Day events being held in the UK, with plenty across Europe and the US, there are hundreds of opportunities for women to get involved, and for men to support them along the way!

March 8th celebrates the woman, the joy of life and motivation to live. On International Women's Day men acknowledge the women in their lives, mothers, wives, daughters, colleagues, not only that, International Women's Day is a time for everyone to celebrate women on a more personal level, and many give the most special woman or women in their lives a gift as a sign of their appreciation. While women around the world are fighting for gender equality, it is easy to forget the hard work women do that that is closer to home, and just as important.

Whether she is the mother of your child, your bride-to-be, your best friend or sister, if she's always there for you when you need her the most, then this is the day to celebrate her strength and solidarity. On this most monumental day, make sure you show support, love and appreciation to the most important women in your life - our International Women's Day gift ideas are designed to help you do just that.

Marked as a major day of global celebration, International Women's Day acknowledges the economic, political and social achievements of women.
